A Hike on Sucia
Our last morning on Sucia started out quite overcast, but luckily cleared up as the day progressed.
After an early lunch of avocado toast we decided it was a great day for a short hike to the other side of the island.
It’s been over a year since my last hike, so needless to say, I am not an avid hiker.
I badly sprained my ankle last August, hurt my back in January and my neck 2 weeks ago, so needless to say I am not in the best of shape.
I was a little nervous, especially about my ankle because apparently it is quite easy to reinjure it.
A few years ago we went for a hike while on a boat trip and I was wearing regular sneakers when I slipped on the rocks at a beach.
Luckily I didn't hurt myself, but it made me realize I absolutely needed to get some decent hiking footwear.
I bought a pair of Columbia hiking shoes in Friday Harbor and to this day they are the most comfortable shoes I own.
I also had some orthotics made especially for sneakers or hiking shoes and they are amazing.
It really helps with my back pain and it gives me all the support I need while hiking.
The other thing I like to wear is a long sleeved fast drying top and long fast drying hiking pants to protect me from not only the sun but also those pesky forest insects.
I also wear a hat, sunglasses and a bag for my water bottle, phone, bug spray and sunscreen.
I linked some of my favourites right here.
The hike today was lovely, not too long and not too hard and the weather was lovely.
We saw an owl, a snake and some enormous slugs.
My ankle, back and neck felt fine so I might be up for a longer hike next time.
We are heading to Stuart Island next so maybe I'll make it up to the lighthouse this time.
Hopefully there will be room on the dock in Prevost tomorrow.
I will keep you posted.
Love,
Renate
