Boat Life
The humming of the generator is usually my queu to get up in the morning. This is usually around 8 am. We only run it in the morning when we are at a park without power so we can charge our electronics, make cappuccinos and use the toaster. Luckily its pretty quiet so we don’t disturb anyone.
Without an alarm I would sleep forever, I’m one of those people who in their 60’s still sleeps like a teenager. Lucky me I guess.
It is another beautiful morning in paradise, and captain Jeff is wondering if I’m making anything “special” for breakfast. This is usually code for pancakes and bacon (vegan bacon that is).
On the boat I make vegan pancakes often. It’s basically flour, chia seeds and almond milk.
With it I usually serve plant based sausages or bacon with maple syrup.
I’m partial to Fieldroast products but there are many other brands out there.
It is surprisingly good and I have to be careful not to indulge. I would just have to pay for it later.
As much as I love spending time on our boat, it sometimes feels like being on an episode of “Below Deck”.
Our boat is a 42 ft sundeck trawler on 4 levels. It is surprising how much room there is and how many different places there are to clean.
The work never really ends.
From cooking breakfast, lunch and dinner to cleaning staterooms, the galley and the 2 heads (boat term for toilets).
I sometimes feel like I’m a chief stew on a cruise ship.
The one man deck crew also has a lot of work to do.
Washing windows, floors, spraying the hull, plotting routes and checking the weather.
But it’s not all work and no play.
We love hiking and e-biking whenever we can, and at 5 o clock it is cocktail time on the back deck.
We are very fortunate to be able to spend time in these wonderful San Juan Islands.
It makes up for all the time and money spent, and we’re hoping to be able to keep doing this for years to come.
Cheers!
